7 Oct 2016 :
It all started many, many years ago at a dinner in a relative's house in Manchester, UK. Must have been around 1963, and the wine I was introduced to as a young 17 year old was Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 53 years ago - so many vintages, so many wonderful times.
It was the most exquisite wine I could ever imagine. Perhaps though I was seduced by the verbal passion of Pepe Baca, a young Spanish businessman who was waxing lyrically about the blend, in between telling us all about this wonderful village in the South of France.
And so it was that this wine was to become my favorite; the one I would choose whenever I had a particularly special event to celebrate over dinner.
Marriage, Births, Christenings, business successes, every one of life's special events was celebrated with the best bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape that I could afford.
So where exactly is Chateauneuf du Pape and why am I visiting there after so many years?
"Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a historic village between the towns of Orange and Avignon, in France's southern Rhone Valley. It is famous for powerful, full-bodied red wines made predominantly from the classic southern Rhone grape trio: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. These three varieties are behind the vast majority of the appellation's red wines, although a total of eighteen are approved for use – a mix of black, green and pink-skinned varieties.."
This looks like a pretty awesome tour we should look at taking? http://www.avignon-prestigetour.com/fr/
